Warm weather is finally here and there are lots of baby geese on the rivers these days. Corn is growing about knee high. We’ve been seeing several broods of mallards on the canals. All the wood ducks have hatched their young out of the boxes along our Yakima riverfront. Only two and a half months to go until the early goose season. The summer is moving right along. We still have a few openings for ducks and goose for Washington and Oregon with several dates already filled up. On the Canada side of things we have some September dates left and one October slot still open. We have also been booking spring snow goose for Saskatchewan. You are allowed to shoot 20 snows a day. We will only be taking one party a day. The season is the last three weeks in April 2009. Cost for these hunts is $1400 each or if six or more are in your party the cost drops to $1200 each. All hunts will include food, lodging, stamps and bird cleaning. These dates should go fast so don’t wait. This is a great way to extend our hunting season.
We are all done painting our snow/blue decoys and now we are painting honkers and whitefronts. We will be selling some of these custom decoys this fall. They will include Tim Grounds calling Honker, Hunter Grounds calling Honker and Kelly Powers lesser. All signature series, all custom painted and textured Hardcores.
I have talked to several farmers in Canada and they shared with me the long range weather forecast for Saskatchewan. The west side of Saskatchewan and Alberta are going to be moderate with moisture which means good news for us in Washington. More ducks will come down the Pacific Flyway. They received two inches of rain a couple of weeks ago. With our corn ponds full they should only hold more ducks this year. Hunting is already so good in these ponds that it is hard to imagine it any better! The Canada forecast won’t affect the canada geese so much as a lot of our geese come to the Washington area from Alaska.
If you are planning on booking a hunt this season now is the time to call before we are totally booked.
Have a great summer.
